LRB Seismic Isolation Case Study: Medina Hospital (First Misamis Oriental General Hospital) – Proven Performance in the June 2026 Philippines Earthquake

Project Overview

First Misamis Oriental General Hospital – commonly known as Medina Hospital – is located in North Poblacion, Medina, Misamis Oriental, Philippines. This project is a major expansion and upgrade (Phase I) of the existing hospital, comprising a sixstorey building with a basement. With a total investment of approximately PHP 900 million, the hospital will expand its bed capacity from 28 to 103, making it the largest hospital facility in the province and significantly enhancing healthcare services for the region.

The Philippines lies in the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region of high seismic activity. As a critical healthcare infrastructure, Medina Hospital demanded the highest possible seismic protection standards. Our company supplied the complete LRB (Lead Rubber Bearing) seismic isolation system for this project – a decision that would prove vital in the months ahead.

What is LRB (Lead Rubber Bearing)?

LRB is a mature, highly effective seismic isolation device. It consists of multiple layers of rubber and steel plates laminated together, with a lead core inserted at the centre. During an earthquake, the bearing deforms horizontally to absorb seismic energy and lengthen the building’s natural period, shifting it away from the dominant frequency of ground motion. The lead core adds substantial damping and energy dissipation through hysteretic yielding. Compared to conventional fixedbase designs, seismic isolation with LRB can reduce the seismic forces transmitted to the superstructure by over 65%. That is why LRB is a preferred solution for critical facilities such as hospitals and schools.

The Ultimate Test: The June 2026 Philippine Earthquake

On the morning of June 8, 2026, at 7:37 AM local time, a devastating magnitude7.8 earthquake struck off the coast of Mindanao. The epicentre was located 32 km west of Maasim, Sarangani Province, at a depth of 33 km. According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), more than 2,000 aftershocks were recorded, with the strongest reaching magnitude 6.4. General Santos City reported an intensity of VIII (″very destructive″) on the PHIVOLCS scale.

This powerful earthquake caused widespread building collapses, damaged thousands of structures, and tragically claimed 47 lives, injured 688 people, and displaced over 340,000 residents as of June 11. Estimated infrastructure losses reached USD 9.2 million.

In this severe seismic event, the Medina Hospital equipped with our LRB isolation bearings demonstrated outstanding performance. The isolation system effectively lengthened the building’s fundamental period and drastically reduced the horizontal seismic forces transmitted to the upper structure. Thanks to the superior energydissipation capacity of our LRB bearings, the hospital’s main structure remained essentially undamaged – ensuring that this soontobe largest provincial hospital kept its structural integrity intact even under extreme ground shaking.

Project Value & Significance

The Medina Hospital project is a landmark LRB seismic isolation case study for our company in the Philippine market. The successful performance – especially during the realworld magnitude7.8 earthquake in June 2026 – provides unequivocal evidence of the reliability and safety of our LRB system under the most severe seismic conditions.

For critical infrastructure like hospitals located in highseismic zones, seismic isolation is not an option – it is a necessity. This project demonstrates that our LRB technology can deliver lifesaving protection, minimising structural damage and ensuring postearthquake functionality – which is essential for emergency response and community resilience.
