What is Elastic Bridge Bearing?

Laminated bridge bearings


The purpose of elastomeric bearings is to support a bridge or other heavy structure so that the load moves slightly in the horizontal direction relative to the ground or foundation. Without such bearings, the bridge support may break or fracture during movement due to ground movement or thermal expansion and contraction. Resilient bearing pads compress under vertical loads and accommodate horizontal rotational and horizontal shear movements.


The internal structure of a resilient bearing consists of three layers: a lower "pan" made of steel, which sits on a foundation or base; a relatively thin resilient pad (rectangular or disk-shaped) that rests on the lower pan; and a steel plate set loosely on top of the resilient disk, on which the weight of the bridge rests. The bearings are usually produced as a unit ready for installation.


Resilient pads can be made of any of a variety of materials, including natural rubber, elastomer, PTFE, or synthetic rubber (e.g., neoprene).

Elastomeric bearing pads are the most economical solution for use in the construction of large span bridges and buildings.

Elastomeric bearings are often used in applications other than bridges, for example, to support buildings built on soil that may move slightly and cause concrete loads to crack in the absence of elastomeric bearings.
